Timothy J. Dowd is Professor of Sociology at Emory University. Having earned his PhD at Princeton University, Dowd specializes in cultural sociology and organizational sociology. His research focuses especially on creative careers and creative industries, global flows of music, underground music scenes, musical canons, and the history of music sociology. His research is published in such leading journals as Annual Review of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Poetics: Journal of Empirical Research on Culture, Media, and the Arts, Social Forces, and Work and Occupations. Dowd was previously Editor-in-Chief of Poetics: Journal of Empirical Research on Culture, Media, and the Arts (2010 – 2014), the elected Chair of the Sociology of Culture Section (2014 – 2015), and Department Chair of Emory Sociology (2014 – 2024). His current activities include serving on the editorial board of the journal, Work & Occupations (doing so since 2019).
